I started racing in the summer of 1998 at Red Devil Speedway in Hartford, SD in the Rookie Sprint Class. My first car was a 1992 Gambler. My second night out was up in flames. I hit the wall, flipped a few times, and the car went up in flames. My dad and I rebuilt the car and made it out for the rest of the season.
The following year I purchased a car from Kenny Hanson. I raced out at Rapid Speedway and at Hartford Speedway. I had a rough learning curve for my first full racing season. I achieved my goal of finishing top 10 at points at Rapid Speedway and captured the “Rookie of the Year” award.
In 2000 I raced at Rapids Speedway and Hartford again. I had my first heat race and feature win this year at Madison, SD. I took my steel headed motor to the Jackson Nationals and was able to qualify it into the “A” main. I was able to win a few more heat races and another A main this year. Unfortunately, my season ended early with an overnight stay at the hospital because of an accident at the Rapid Nationals. We did finish the season top five in points!
In 2001, I started my relationship with Singer Racing Engines. I started off the year winning the first race out at Rapid Speedway. I got my second win only a few weeks later. We were off to a good start. I ventured off to different tracks this year. I hit Jackson Speedway, Eagle Raceway, Husets Speedway, Watertown, Huron, Madison, and weekly at Rapid Speedway and Hartford. It seemed like we very close to more wins, but didn’t quite pull it off. We had a great time racing wheel-to-wheel with many different drivers. We missed the Rapid Speedway point title this year by only four points. I got married this year to my friend, Heather.
The following year, 2002 was uneventful. We only won two races this year. We finished third in points at Rock Rapids. We raced at many of the same tracks as previous years. Like I said, very uneventful.
It was time for a change of scenery, so in 2003 we had John Singer build us our first ASCS motor. We were able to race Jackson for a majority of the season. Our first heat race win came that season at Jackson. We were very close to winning our first race there. I led all but the last two laps of that race but ended up fifth. We still made our weekly trip to Rocky and tried to hit Husets as much as possible. We ended the season with only one A feature win. A very depressing and trying season to say the least.
2004 was basically the same as 2003. We raced weekly at Jackson and Rock Rapids. We started using Schnee chassis for both of our cars. Brian’s been a big help and is always there to fix a car in a time of need. This is very beneficial for me. We did not score a single A feature victory that year but did receive a major prize. My son Jac was born on Sept. 3rd. Yes that is the way we spell Jac. How else would sprint fans spell it?
Our 2005 season was kind of a rebound season. We hooked up with Vince Valeriano to provide us with shocks and some much needed set-up help. He has done just that. If there is ever a question he can answer it or find a solution. We were able to score a couple victories at Rock Rapids along with some near misses at Jackson. We made our first trip to Devils Bowl in the spring of that year for the Winter Nationals and were able to make the A main for the final night there. We made the entire season at Jackson and Rock Rapids. At Jackson we ended up 7th which was accomplishment for us considering we were in 14th position at midseason’s points. Our final year at Rapid found us in 5th. Oh yeah, I graduated from college that year with an AA in CAD/Manufacturing engineering from Southeast Technical Institute. Lucky for me, the race the night of graduation rained out.
This year we have sold both of our steel engines and had another ASCS motor built by John Singer. We plan on staying busy with the ASCS Northern Plains, ASCS Midwest, and at Jackson Speedway. This will be much more difficult than racing locally but I believe our team is up to the challenge. |
